A New Era for Payment Initiation
The e-QR Payment Standard represents a significant step forward in how merchants and consumers interact during payment. By defining a common QR code format that any payment service provider can support, we remove the fragmentation that has held back QR-based payments in Europe.
Why Now?
With the rise of instant payments across the EU and the increasing adoption of mobile banking, the time is right for a unified approach to QR payment initiation. The standard builds on existing ISO 20022 messaging and is designed to work seamlessly with PSD2 payment initiation services.
What This Means for Merchants
Merchants will be able to display a single QR code that works with any compliant payment application. No more proprietary solutions, no more vendor lock-in. The standard is free to implement and governed by a non-profit association (MTÜ).
Next Steps
We are currently in the bootstrap phase, working with early adopters and advisory board members to refine the specification. The first public draft of the technical specification is expected in Q2 2026.
